Dr. Mehmet Oz from The Dr. Oz Show will undergo a colonoscopy on the season premiere September 7. He celebrated his 50th birthday in June and wanted to highlight the procedures value on the show. The doctor that performs the colonoscopy is Dr. Jon LaPook, a gastroenterologist who is chief medical correspondent for CBS News. During the examination the doctor finds a polyp, or precancerous growth inside his intestine. If this polyp was left behind or undiscovered it could have likely become colon cancer. Dr. Oz is quoted as saying “This was a shakeup for me,” he told PEOPLE. “I have done everything right. I don’t have any family history, and yet I’m high risk now.” The next step for him is that he will be screened again in three months to see if all of the precancerous tissue was removed and if any other growths have formed. He will also now have to get regular colonoscopies to see if there are any new polyps. Dr. Oz is very grateful that he did not put this procedure off like many people do and he believes this procedure saved his life. He will openly discuss the health scare on the season premiere.
