Rue McClanahan of the Golden Girls died early Thursday as a result of a massive stroke. McClanahan played Blanche Devereaux who was known as the man happy character on the show. After the death of McClanahan this morning this now leaves Betty White as the only surviving Golden Girl. McClanahan also played Vivian Cavender Harmon on TV’s Maude, and Fran Crowley on Mama’s Family in addition to the Golden Girls. In an interview with the NY Times McClanahan spoke of the Golden Girls saying that the show was aimed at proving “that when people mature, they add layers. They don’t turn into other creatures.
